Mallorca is the biggest of the Balearics, and its size is reflected in its diversity. Palma, the only real city in the Balearics, has wonderful Gothic architecture and grand mansions. The maze-like streets are great for exploration, and the city has some of the most inexpensive tapas bars and restaurants in the Islands. There is also lively nightlife to be found in the Plaça Llotja area. The north of the island is dominated by the Serra de Tamuntana, with its craggy peaks and sheltered olive groves. This is a great spot for walking, with well-marked trails and wonderful views. Pollença is an ancient and quiet town, at the foot of the Serra de Tramuntana. The Plaça Major has several laid-back cafes, but the town’s unmissable attraction is the Via Crucis – a long stone stairway which ascends El Calvari north of the town. Port de Sóller is one of the west coast’s most popular resorts, with its horseshoe-shaped bay providing watersports and sun-bathing. There are wonderful views along the rocky coast to be had from the lighthouse at the west of the bay. Port d’Alcúdia has a long and gorgeous beach, and it's the gateway to the Parc Natural de S’Albufrea, a wetland reserve with great bird-watching. Mallorca is home of sobrassada, a spicy sausage and ensaimada, a sweet pastry which is a great breakfast treat. |
