Maharashtra holidays

A busy and affluent city, Maharashtra has so much to discover that just one week may not be enough. Book rental accommodation for your perfect Indian break with Holiday Lettings.

About Maharashtra, India

The history of Maharashtra spans back to ancient times. The city has been growing at a colossal rate since its creation. It is now India's second-most populous state, so if you don't like crowds, this may not be the place for you.

The Pandharpur, Dehu and Alandi shegon are all places of worship for Hindus and they all fall within the city borders. Many take part in pilgrimages to these places, though you can still see them even if you're not religious.

Maharashtra spreads out across the western and central parts of India. It has a lengthy, breathtaking coastline of 840 kilometres.

It has a typical monsoon climate, so make sure to avoid June and September. The summer months are from March to May. It can get very hot, though. So, if you’re not much of a sun worshipper, it might be better to book your trip for winter.

Though the official language is Marathi, English is spoken by most people in urban areas, so no need to worry about the language gap.

What to do in Maharashtra

While you're in Maharashtra, take the opportunity to see one of India's most incredible monuments, the Kailasa Temple.

This ancient Hindu temple was carved into the solid rock on orders from King Krishna I in AD 760 to represent Kailash, Shiva's Himalayan home. 200,000 tons of rock had to be removed using hammer and chisel to get this temple finished. It’s quite a spectacular sight to see!

The Ajanta caves are well worth seeing, too! They line the horseshoe gorge on the Waghore River and provide a fascinating attraction for your holiday. Five of the caves are prayer halls, and others are monasteries. Some are the early Buddhist caves and others date from 5th century AD. It’s a good ideal to join a private tour so you can get the most out of your visit.

For all you history buffs, go to the fortress of Janjira. Built on an island 500m offshore, it's one of the most spectacular forts on this stretch of coastline. Take a look!

Top travel tips for Maharashtra

During the summer, Maharashtra will be full of delicious seasonal foods like mango, kokum and Coconut. In winter, there will be rich sesame and jaggery-based sweets. Fish curries are a staple throughout the year, so make sure you try some!

Tuk-tuks are the best way to travel through the city, just hop on and enjoy watching the exciting local life unfold in front of you. It might be a bit bumpy on some roads, but much better than driving yourself!

Beaches, mountains, caves, temples, forests and cities – Maharashtra has it all! Begin your journey through this wonderful part of India by booking your Holiday Lettings holiday rental today.
