A great home base for budget travelers to visiting the west of Ireland

We finished our Ireland trip with Pat at his comfortable property only 25 minutes from the Shannon Airport. Pat was an incredibly gracious, knowledgeable, helpful host. This spacious and affordable self-catering accommodation provided us a perfect location, convenient to the airport and away from the crowds. We are" do-it yourselfers" and "off-the-beaten path" travelers so this fit the bill for us perfectly. July and August are the heavy vacation times in Ireland and many of the most popular places can get very crowded. Pat suggested a few things to see, such as the Clare Glens, that were both uncrowded and beautiful. The loft kitchen had a large skylight that you could stand up and look out at the idyllic countryside surrounding the property. The gardens were well-maintained with eye-catching flowers throughout the property. There was ample parking at the lodge, which is another consideration not to be taken for granted. We wish we had known about this property for the first few days of our trip because it would have been perfect place to unwind after the long overnight flight to Shannon and it would have been more accessible for a newly arrived Yank coming to grips with driving in Ireland. A couple of things you need to know. The stand-up shower is a bit tight for someone like me who is bigger than the average bear, but if I can get in it you probably can. Second, Internet and laundry facilities are provided in the main house not in the guesthouses, which are separate from the main house in a remodeled stable or carriage house. We found this to be common at all but one of the places we stayed during our 16 days in Ireland. Third the stairs/ladder to the well-equipped loft kitchen might prove to be a problem for some travelers. For us this added to the charm, authenticity and character of the lodge. If these prove to be insurmountable problems for you, be advised that you could end up spending twice as much or more for self-catering lodging during Ireland's high season. For my wife and I, my needing to squeeze into the shower was a small price to pay for the hospitality, privacy, affordability and convenience of Coolbegs Lodge.
