Heraklion holidays

The capital city of Crete, known as Heraklion, has plenty of buildings and artefacts that are thousands of years old, but the area has been given a modern makeover in recent years that has made it a wildly popular holiday destination. The excellent museums and cultural festivals, wonderful dining options, and easy access to several of the other Aegean Islands mean that there's something for everyone here. Visit the grand architecture and vast beaches of Karteros, the strip of museums and art attractions along Xanthoudidou Street, or watch the beautiful sunsets from the Harbor.

While you're in Heraklion, be sure to make time for some of these other must-see attractions and destinations:

  • Minoan Palace of Knossos: Built over 9,000 years ago, this palace is the most important and best-known complex throughout the island of Crete.
  • Heraklion Archaeological Museum: Many ancient artefacts can be found at this museum that hosts finds from Minoan civilisation and from excavations throughout the island.
  • Nikos Kazantzakis Museum: This museum is dedicated entirely to the island's most prominent intellectual figure.
  • Meidani Square: Head to the open market here to buy fresh local produce, herbs and spices, and even natural remedies.
  • Go horseback riding: Enjoy an unforgettable experience of riding along the beach of Karteros.
  • Amoudara: The main beach area in Heraklion consists of a three-kilometre strip of sandy beach, plenty of bars and cafes, and even an open-air theatre.

While well-known artists and musicians visit Heraklion throughout the year for live performances and gallery exhibits, the island hosts one of its biggest events every summer. Be sure to check out the Heraklion Summer Arts Festival, held from June to September, which features traditional dance performances, recreations of ancient Greek plays, and the sculptures and paintings of some of the most popular artists in Greece.

With so many things to do, the prospect of seeing all the sights can be daunting for some travellers. Luckily, Heraklion has an excellent bus system that will get you anywhere you'd like to go in the area. There are also multiple ferries and catamarans that offer rides to nearby areas for a pleasant day trip. The historic town of Rethymno, the village of Matala, and the picturesque mountain views of Samaria Gorge are all accessible by car or ferry within two hours.

A holiday rental is the preferred option for those staying in Heraklion. Choose a condo with spacious rooms and all the creature comforts of home, or opt for a villa within walking distance of the great restaurants and bars in the city. Whatever you're looking for in a holiday, there's a home that will help make your stay here everything you're looking for.

Julies Apartments Kokkini Hani Heraklion Crete
Thankyou Julie

My sister and I arrived from New Zealand and we had 2 nights booked at Julie's Appartments but we ended up staying for 7 nights!! Julie gave us fantastic advice on sights to see and where to eat etc which were all perfect. We loved Kokkini Hani. Our Appartment was great especially our large balcony and it was perfect having the Supermarket right next door. Thankyou Julie, you made our stay a perfect place to be. see more
Kokkini Hani 1st floor Apartment 100m from the sea
Great Apartment – Excellent Value for Money.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Kokkini Hani - which is a pleasant location 15 mins from Heraklion airport. The apartment is well equipped and clean - with everything you need to make yourself comfortable during your stay. The kitchen and bathroom are basic, but clean and fully functional. The bus stops are within a minute walk, the buses run regularly every 15-20 minutes both into Heraklion and towards Agios Nicolaos; they are easy to use with helpful staff. Supermarkets are open every day until late and the beach is within 2 minute walking distance. All the restaurants we tried were very good and the Cretan people are genuinely warm and friendly. We recommend this apartment without reservation - Thank-you Evi & Manolis.see more
Luxury city one bedroom apartment
A wonderful holiday

We were situated in a nice quiet part of Heraklion within a few minutes walk to the centre. There was a very nice supermarket nearby and high class bars and restaurants. The apartment was very clean and comfortable and we had everything we needed for our stay. The bathroom was modern and the shower worked perfectly. We didn't eat in much as we wanted to sample the restaurants in the town centre. The balcony had the morning sun and it was nice to have breakfast on and an evening drink after a heavy day of shopping. Eva was very kind and helpful to us and provided a welcome pack to help us settle in. She left us with a contact number should anything go wrong which we didn't need. The Greek people are very welcoming and we will certainly be making a return visit. Thank you Eva for a great holiday.see more
Villa Galini
Villa Lovely, Owners Lovely, Crete Lovely!

Villa Galini is a gem; comfortable, spacious, tastefully decorated, very clean and in a quiet area that is still close to a variety of amenities. The owners cannot do enough for you and we were spoiled with gifts of home cooking, fruit and vegetables. Cleaning was regular and thorough. The pool had a good depth though out which was great as we enjoy swimming rather than having a 'leisure' or 'fun' pool, however you would need to closely supervise children who might use the pool and pool area. The gardens are lovely and there is a well planned outside area with translucent wind breaks which ensured that you could sit out at any time of the day and evening. You must visit the taverna in the next village (turn right at the T junction just down the road from the villa on the way into Espikopi itself (landmark is a church at the T junction - turn right there). The taverna is on the right not far down the road. The menu does not have fish, however the the meat dishes are superb and the daily 'specials' excellent, plus the owners are really welcoming. The villa is located only a 15 minute drive from Heraklion airport, but without being on any plane route - so no noise. This is a big bonus. We have been visiting Crete for 9 years now and have stayed mostly much further from the airport and had more driving to do. We found the villa to be excellent value for money and more comfortable than some for which we have paid a lot more money. The only suggestion we would make is perhaps to consider the 2 upstairs twin bedrooms as being for adults as well as children and providing wardrobe space (the two doubles downstairs have great walk in wardrobes) and some air conditioning. Although it is very safe to leave the windows open upstairs and there are good fly screens, some nights are very hot and with little air circulating. The owners immediately supplied a large fan when we asked, which was very helpful. The downstairs bedrooms have air conditioning of course. This area is historical and you will have to travel a bit if you want typical tourist attractions such as water parks, nightclubs, etc however the immediate locality has supermarkets, tavernas, an internet cafe, (the villa has wi fi itself) petrol stations etc and it is very close to Heraklion, which is worth a visit for museums, shops and markets and for a variety of boat trips. We would most certainly return to Villa Galini. Love to Demi who made sure that our stay was great - don't forget to put up a villa sign outside! We wish you and Michael a fantastic wedding in 2013 and a happy, healthy life together. From the family Shynnsee more
Valley View House in Anopoli village. Near Kokkini Hani, beaches and Heraklion
Beautiful house in sleepy village

We are a family - 2 adults, 3 children (14,12 & 10) and we spent 2 weeks travelling around Crete staying in different places. This beautifully restored house in Anopolis was the perfect base for the last leg of our journey - 3 days in Heraklion. From here we did Knossos, the Archeological Museum, a day trip to Spinaonga with lunch at Plakas, swimming off the coast. We also had some very lovely lazy breakfasts on the wonderful terrace overlooking the mountains and some late nights enjoying the night stars. Anopolis was tiny but the local shop had everything we needed including the nicest fresh bread we had eaten all holiday. The air conditioning was vital as it was hot in August but the kids were very pleased with the space, and in comparison to some of the other houses we had rented, including one with a pool, they all said this was the best house. Julie was a fantastic host too, with lots of advice about what to do locally. It was clean, well looked after and we could have happily spent more days there.see more
