A romantic bolthole, oozing with character and charm on the edge of Halifax
Cosy cottage, wonderful view

We stayed here for an extended stay whilst our new house was being renovated and it was a perfect comfortable base to come back to every night. The cottage has been renovated to a high standard and the large living room is light & airy but with plenty of cosy finishing touches. The bed is the most comfortable I've slept on (I even looked at the make of the mattress so we can buy the same for home!) and the bathroom is fantastic with both a deep bath & overhead powerful shower. Take advantage of sunny days and evenings to sit on the bench at the front and admire the view - it's a real sun trap. Jane was great to deal with and we'd recommend to family & friends and would stay again if we needed a local bolt hole again. As locals we can recommend both good pubs and places to eat. The Wainhouse Tavern (nearly next door) serves a good range of real ales, wine at decent prices and have just started to serve some food. If you head towards Sowerby Bridge the Shepherd's Rest is a good traditional pub, real fire in winter and good beer & wine (only a 10/15 minute walk down hill). Carry on into Sowerby Bridge and you have a wide selection - The Works at the far end is a freehouse with large range of beers, good wine & serves good food during the day & a brunch menu on the Sunday (dog friendly too). The Firehouse serves Tapas and a range of other dishes with a busy bar on the ground floor. Along the main street are several good options (3 good Indian Restaurants, a Turkish Restaurant, Gimbals if you want to go somewhere special). There are also some new bars including Sowerby Taps and the Hogshead Tavern just on a side road. Finally there is Cobblestones which overlooks the canal and also serves good food. If you want to stretch your legs a bit further or are happy with a 10 minute drive try The Winterburn just outside of Warley village but book a table on weekends. In Halifax centre you've got Ricci's Place and La Luna for food and take the time to find The 3 Pidgeons which is a pub with a warm welcome and all the original 1920's fittings in place. Ricci's Tapas is at the Dean Clough complex along with a growing range of bars. The Dean Clough complex also has a theatre & art gallery. For culture try climbing Wainhouse Tower on bank holidays - it's a long climb and your legs will ache but the views worth it on a clear day. There's also Shibden Hall, the Bankfield Museum at Boothtown and the Piece Hall is due to re-open in late May. If you like walking there are plenty of places all around Halifax and down the Calder Valley and don't forget to support the local shops, cafes and pubs in the area who are recovering from the devastating floods. In short there's a plentiful supply of good food and drinking places around the whole area with plenty to keep you busy for a short stay but also a good central point for day trips to the coast, Yorkshire Dales and the Peak District as well as good train links to Manchester & Leeds for shopping. … see more
