The people of Ghana are famed for giving the friendliest welcome in Africa. A former British colony, Ghana is rich in gold and was one of the first countries in Africa to become independent. There are remnants of the country’s European links, as well as colourful traditional festivals. Ghana also has a rich and lush landscape, with rainforests in the south and west and new reserves such as Kakum National Park opening up to preserve the amazing wildlife. The capital is Accra, a city with a real African flavour – check out Makola and Kaneshie markets and the shabby chic neighbourhood of James Town.
