About Galle, Sri Lanka
Founded long before the Portuguese arrived, Galle is a unique blend of culture, architecture and history.
Persian, Arabic, Greek, Roman, Indian and Chinese traders all flocked here centuries before Europeans took over. Each have left their mark on the city, but the Europeans may have had the biggest influence.
Make sure you visit the Dutch reformed church, which was originally built in 1640. It has an organ dating back to 1760, as well as an iconic pulpit made from Malaysian calamander wood. These features make this church the perfect place to pause and reflect.
Though the city hasn't got a dry season, we'd suggest going in January and February so you can enjoy the heat with a little less rain.
While you're there, make sure to try all the local food you can—it’s delicious! But if you're looking for international cuisine from all over the world, then don't worry. There are plenty of restaurants serving everything you could wish to try!
What to do in Galle, Sri Lanka
If you fancy a bit of an adventure, head to Flag Rock at the southern end of the fort.
Daredevils jump off and leap into the water from the top. But we'd recommend just enjoying the spectacular sunset.
Head to the Historical Mansion, the National Museum and the Marine Archeological Museum to find out more about the area's history.
If you’re more of a hands-on history nut, head to the Old Gate. You'll see an ornately carved British coat of arms on the outer side of the gate. This portion of the old wall served as a warehouse for spices that were to be taken out through the port.
Take a tuk-tuk up to the Japanese Peace Pagoda and enjoy the spectacular views, as well as the beautiful building. This is another great place to watch the sunset.

If you get tired of wandering around the city, head to the beach. Unawatuna has a lovely spacious beach with plenty of spots to eat, drink and take a dip. The sun may not shine as brightly here, but it's still a great spot to relax.
