Pushkar Camel Festival 2009![]() ![]() ![]() Dates: 1 Nov 2009 - 2 Nov 2009Type: Body, Mind & SpiritLocation: RajasthanDetails: What was initially a local camel trading fair at the lakeside town of Pushkar has now become one of the most colourful and exciting of annual events in the beautiful region of north Indian Rajasthan. Starting on 30th October the event extends into the start of November, a brilliant time for visiting India as the temperatures become slightly cooler. Visitors can watch camels in vibrant headgears and ornamental saddles being sold by traders who have travelled from miles to reach this tranquil town and take part in the market. The cattle fair is made all the more interesting by being part of an important Hindu festival. One of the main events at the festival is the camel racing against the backdrop of sand dunes and hills, and there is also plenty of singing and dancing. Outside the period of the festival Pushkar is still a lovely base for exploring Rajasthan, with its proximity to the holiest lake in the country, said to have been created by a falling lotus petal, as well as to various historical sights. India’s exotic architecture and stunning scenery provide something for every type of tourist to enjoy. |
