Just a couple of miles down the road from Windermere, you'll find Bowness village on the east shores of the lake. Lively nightlife, restaurants and shops line the high street, and hire boats are a popular attraction in the Bowness Bay. Ambleside lies to your north, via a scenic drive on the A591 (voted Britain's favourite stretch of road!). The pretty historic village nestles on the northern shore of the Lake, and has grown to become one of the Lake District's most cosmopolitan communities without losing its traditional charm. Ambleside is a lovely place to while away a day, and to enjoy a romantic meal by night. Some of the finest restaurants in the Lake District are found in and around Ambleside. Cruises on Lake Windermere can be taken from Waterhead Pier, just outside Ambleside village centre.  …see more

At Waterhead Pier, just outside the village centre, Windermere Lake Cruises depart throughout the day and provide a car-free route to both Bowness and Lakeside. Exploring by car is also a breeze; Ambleside lies on the A590 which is famously scenic and forms the main route into the heart of the Lakes. Drive south to the stunning Troutbeck Valley, Windermere and Bowness, or north past Rydal Water to Grasmere. You might like to visit two of William Wordsworth's other former homes during your stay. Cumbria, at the very north of England, is amongst its most beautiful regions. The Lake District National Park has long been celebrated for its mirror lakes, craggy peaks, holiday cottages and country houses. There are also an abundance of pretty villages and towns. The Lake District is heaven for those who love the outdoors, with sailing, rock climbing and hiking and much more on offer. Cumbria has sandy coastlines and interesting towns to visit, including old-fashioned Penrith.
