"Unacceptable and worst holiday cottage we ever stayed in."

Unfortunately we booked Walnut Tree Cottage for two weeks, and even though we arrived two weeks after the previous guest had left early due to the wet carpet and damp in the downstairs bedroom this is… More

A complete deception we suggest. These people were not holidaymakers. They did not want to be with us.They arrived in a terrible mood because they'd had to book our accommodation at pretty much the last minute, owing to the fact that their new home that they were expecting and looking forward to moving into, was not ready for them. Worse was the fact that it was obvious to us that it was totally the wrong location for them, because the gentleman was a businessman from Exeter, and worse still, for some strange reason the reception for his phone was very bad, to the point of being unusable. No one else in 10 years has previously expressed the same problem, but for a businessman to be without proper communication for a two week period, would have been extremely difficult. Having realised what a bad mistake they had made, and that two weeks without a phone, and having a substantial commute every day, was not on, we suggest they simply looked for a pretext in which to only have to stay for a week, and to try and get a refund for their second week. That pretext wasn't difficult to find, because owing to a previous family having caused a lot of damage, resulting in a flood inside and outside a lower bedroom, there was some bad staining on the floor, which we could of course do nothing about in the middle of the season. They came to us saying that there was still some dampness, but as the repair and rectification had been made some two weeks earlier, we simply did not agree with their assessment. Nevertheless, because we wanted them to be happy, we did not argue with them, and simply offered them a very nice alternative bedroom, with mainly new bedding. Normally this would have been the end of the matter, but it was what came next that was so extraordinary, and exposed the real reason for their complaint. They had told us that the original bedroom was too damp for their son to sleep in. And yet once we'd sorted out a small problem with a bleeping smoke detector, near to the new bedroom, thus arriving at the perfect solution to their 'presenting' problem, they then astonished us by moving their son back to the bedroom that they said was unsuitable for him to sleep in! It took us a little while to work out what was going on, and then we realised. They needed to have a problem, in order to provide justification for asking for a refund for the second week's accommodation, they having arranged to move to a more suitable location. Yes, they could move, but the only way that they could ask for a refund, was to try to find something amiss. Just as long as the bleep near the new bedroom existed, they were alright, and had justification, but as soon as it was going to be rectified next morning, they no longer had a reason to complain, and moved their son back to the room that they said was unacceptable, in order that they could still have their problem! They said that it needed a certain type of fire to dry out the dampness, so we immediately went out and bought one - and then they didn't use it. Had they done so of course, even if there had been a problem, it would have almost immediately have rectified it's self, but of course that wouldn't have suited them. They complained of a musty smell, so we immediately provided an air freshener, but again they didn't use it. They needed a continuing problem. They complained about the television, and yet even though we stood side-by-side with them, watching a perfect picture, we still offered to get them a replacement set. Guess what, they didn't take up our offer. There was at any rate a fire in the 'offending' bedroom, and so we decided one morning, when they had just gone out,to see if it was on. It wasn't of course. We subsequently challenged them about this, and said that we simply didn't believe that they wanted any problems to be resolved, in order that they could always have a problem to provide some justification for their refund request. Having complained about a musty smell, we would have expected that at least a window would have been left a little open, but no, the windows were tightly closed. They tried to persuade us subsequently that this was because of burglars(in the middle of the countryside!) Difficult to understand therefore why there was another window that had been left open. We were then given what we saw to be a cock and bull story, that the wife had turned the fire out before going out, in order that there wouldn't be any fire risk. They hadn't turned anything else out of course, and certainly not a similar fan heater in the lounge. Had it been turned out as we were told, just before they went out, which in turn was just before we went to have a look, it would still have been hot, or as a minimum warm. What did we find – it was stone cold. They then came up with the extraordinary idea that their son might have been at risk from a strange man. Who on earth did they expect would believe that. We are acquainted for the first time, in their review, with the fact that there were apparently nails all over the floor. Had that been the case, why did'nt they mention that to us at the time, because it would have been easy to put right, and their complaint would then have disappeared. In summary, they needed their problem, in order to justify their refund request. They certainly didn't want any so-called problem to be put right, and rejected every attempt that we made to do so. They threatened to take us to Court, but of course that has not happened, because they well know how badly they would get on, having to try and explain why it was that they rejected ever attempt to satisfy them. The inference that we experienced, was that if we would just give them a refund, the whole matter could be forgotten. Well we are not prepared to give in to what we perceived as blackmail. The learning for us is to never again take people who simply don't want to be here. It was not an enjoyable experience for us. We would rather have people who will enjoy our beautiful situation, with the golf course as a bonus.
