Stretching out from mainland Spain in an archipelago, the Balearic Islands each have their own distinct character. Ibiza offers both wild nightlife and sedate luxury retreats amongst its hills, with its hippy roots still in evidence in its laid-back pace of life. The nearest island to the mainland, the island has exquisite coves and beaches, most of which are all but deserted even during the summer. Formentera has wonderful beaches and crystal clear waters. The island’s main town, Sant Francesco Xavier is accessible by foot and the main centre of the island, a short walk from here is Pepe, the island’s favourite bar. While Mallorca has a great selection of cultural sites, with the best galleries and museums in the islands, it also has popular resorts such as Port de Sóller - with its horseshoe-shaped bay providing great watersports and sun-bathing. Menorca has amazing Neolithic remains and a fascinating history. The island’s capital Mahón is best explored on foot, with a great fish market and the Museu de Menorca. All of the Balearics offer a climate that is perfect for beach holidays.
