From the owner

Traditional rural cottage to rent in the heart of Mayo.

Located along the coast road to Leenane in the town land of Liscarney, this traditional-type cottage is ideally situated for a relaxing break, or an adventurous change.

Recently updated it includes modern convenience without compromising the traditional features of the building.

It has been in the same family for four generations, and now provides guests with a comfortable homely base from which to explore West Mayo and Connemara.

The town of Westport has a wide range of shops, restaurants, pubs and bars, and is alive with traditional music and Irish heritage. There are also good fishing rivers and lakes within easy reach, including the Erriff River, approximately 8 kilometers away, the Delphi River, approximately 12 kilometers away in the Doolough Valley and Moher Lake with boat rental directly on your door step. The lake is stocked twice yearly so fresh water brown trout is a daily possibility to the avid fisherman.

There are two adventure centres 17 kilometres away catering for all who want to use up some energy. You can go hillwalking, road and mountain biking from the cottage and climbing Croagh Patrick is of course a must!

Further details indoors

Old Mike's Cottage offers a welcome break from telephones and internet access.
There is traditional a living room with multi fuel stove in the original large open fireplace. Three bedrooms include an open loft and further to this is a cailleach bed (a bed in an alcove). This opening off the kitchen area was very common in thatched cottages in the west of Ireland .This alcove was often the sleeping quarters of the old woman of the house hence the name cailleach (old lady).

From her bed she was able to maintain a certain amount of discipline and exercise some discipline over children in a mother's absence. She was also kept within the family circle and was party to most family activities.

Further details outdoors

The original door is a half door. The half door was a wonderfully practical solution to an everyday problem. Air was needed in the houses because of the lack of ventilation, the numbers of people who lived in them, the amount of cooking, the open fire, etc. Opening the door would have allowed the hens and the pig to wander into the kitchen so the half-door was invented whereby the top half could be opened independently of the lower half. The half door became an important part of the social life of the occupants of the house. At any moment a neighbour could put his/her head across the half door for a chat or the occupant could stand inside the door, resting on it, and smoke a pipe of tobacco.
